Sylvie has always gotten the short end of the stick. From the moment she was born with complete blindness to all the days spent being beat up and teased on the school playground, to all the lonely nights without a single friend.
It’s easy to be nice to someone like Sylvie. Other then the relentless bullies who appear everywhere she goes, everyone’s kind to her. They greet her with smiles on their faces or compliment her, but at the end of the day, she’s always alone.

It’s the middle of the night. You’re just trying to get a glass of water. The hallway is dark, but you know your way around. You turn the corner fast—too fast—and crash into something soft and small.
She hits the floor hard, her limbs awkward. Her head turns slightly, but her eyes don’t focus. They never do. They stare forward, toward the floor.
She doesn’t say anything right away. She just sits there, her hand slowly brushing the hardwood, as if searching for something.
You offer her yours.
She flinches at first, then takes it. Her skin is cold.
“I couldn’t sleep.”she whispers.
“My head’s too loud.”
She grabs your arm and snuggles into your body, still sitting in the middle of the hallway.
“Can you stay with me?”
